When should I take my child to the orthodontist?

Many parents believe they should wait until all baby teeth have fallen out before taking their child to the orthodontist. In reality, the first consultation is recommended around the age of 6 — the approximate age when the first permanent molar erupts.

Why so early?

At 6 years old, it is already possible to identify problems with jaw growth, harmful habits, and a lack of space for permanent teeth. At this age, the bones are still forming, and certain corrections are much simpler and more effective than at an older age.

What is assessed?

  • Whether the jaws are growing proportionately
  • Whether there is enough space for the permanent teeth
  • Whether there is a crossbite, open bite, or other occlusal problems
  • Whether there are habits such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or incorrect tongue posture
  • Whether swallowing, chewing, and speech are normal

Intervening early does not mean treating early

In most cases, the consultation at age 6 results merely in monitoring — I track the child’s development and only intervene when and if necessary. But when there is an indication for early treatment (interceptive orthodontics), the benefits are enormous:

  • Guiding jaw growth in the right direction
  • Preserving or gaining space for permanent teeth
  • Correcting habits before they cause permanent damage
  • Improving the child’s breathing, sleep, and energy levels
  • Shortening or simplifying future treatments

Warning signs for parents

Consider booking an earlier appointment if you notice that your child:

  • Habitually breathes through their mouth
  • Sucks their thumb or a dummy after the age of 3–4
  • Has difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Has teeth that are very crowded or have irregular gaps
  • Shows asymmetry in their face or smile
  • Snores or has restless sleep

Conclusion

Many complex treatments can be prevented with a timely visit to the orthodontist. Prevention is always simpler, faster, and more cost-effective than correction.
